Area Activities
Situated at 1,100m (3,609 ft) Bella Baita and our SerreMarchetto neighborhood has a spectacular panoramic view of historical Germanasca valley and it’s French border that is not to be missed. Our small “baita” (mountain house) or inn’s location offers easy access to walking, trekking, cycling, rock climbing, wildflower, and wildlife spotting all in our tranquil setting.
Gentle neighborhood walks to our family garden, up and around the overlook towards Grandubbione church, or around the cross country ski track behind our inn, has pleasant look out points. These are good warm up walks for a bit of leg stretching. Also just out our door, we have 2 full day hikes, either up to ”Cucetto Peak” and on to “Merla” and L’Aquila, or the “Dubbione Sette Ponte Circular loop”.
Upper Val Chisone, boasts Fenestrelle Fortress, with it’s nearly 4,000 covered stairs, is sometimes referred to as the “Great Wall of Piedmont”, imposingly impressive and worth a visit. Guided tours in English may be arranged with enough participants (minimum 8 ) for the tour to run.
A wander through the neighboring village of Usseaux is sure to delight with it’s colorful and realistic series of wall murals, depicting long ago village life, historical events and flights of fantasy.
Val Chisone, Val Germansca and Val Pellice are rich in history, most notable for their religious history. Known as the Valdesian (Waldensen) valleys, as followers of Waldo of Lyon, the first protestants who migrated to these mountains to escape persecution.
